About the Study
What is this survey all about?
We want to learn how, when, where, and why people travel in and around the National Capital Region. We’re asking you to record your daily travel and activities to help us understand regional transportation patterns. By participating, you can help us plan for future transportation improvements in your community.
Why should I participate?
The information gathered from this survey will be used to understand transportation needs and plan for future transportation improvements. Your participation ensures that households like yours are accurately represented in our regional transportation plans. Your input has a large impact because only a limited number of households are invited to participate.
How was I selected to participate?
Invited households (like yours) were selected at random from all residential addresses in the National Capital Region.
Who is sponsoring this survey?
This survey is sponsored by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board in partnership with the District Department of Transportation, the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and conducted by RSG.

Who should sign up?
Please do not share your invitation code or access code outside of your household.
Only one household member should complete the initial sign-up survey. Once your household is registered, all other members will receive emailed instructions on the next steps if you are participating in the 7-day survey using the rMove app. Each adult household member listed during sign-up must download the rMove app and participate in the survey to be eligible for gift cards.
For the one-day survey, please complete the survey on behalf of your entire household. In this case, one gift card will be provided upon completion.
How much time does it take to participate?
It takes about 10 minutes to sign up for the survey. Once you sign up, we’ll give you instructions for logging your travel and completing the survey. Households that log their travel for seven days in the smartphone app, rMove, will spend about 5-10 minutes each day reporting their travel. Households that log their travel online or over the phone will spend about 10 minutes per household member reporting their travel for one day.
What do I get for participating?
As a thank you for your participation, your household will receive a $5 Amazon e-card for completing the signup survey. As a continued thank you for your participation, your household will receive your choice of an Amazon, Target, or Visa e-gift card for $5 to $20 per person or a gift donation, once all members of your household have reported their travel and completed the full survey. All household members must complete the survey to be eligible for gift cards.
The survey is for legal residents of the United States, 18 years of age or older, who live in the National Capital Region. Employees, clients, contractors, directors and officers of RSG, and their immediate family members and people living in the same household with them are not eligible for incentives. Members of TPB, COG, and sponsoring agencies are eligible to participate, however, members of TPB and COG are not eligible for incentives. Not all completed surveys will qualify for an incentive.
LIMIT ONE INCENTIVE PER HOUSEHOLD per survey stage. One incentive is provided after completing the sign-up survey ($5) and one incentive is provided after all household members have completed the full survey ($5 to $20 per person).
No substitution, cash redemption, or transfer of an incentive is permitted. If an incentive cannot be awarded for any reason, RSG reserves the right to substitute an incentive of equal or greater value. All federal, state and local taxes and all other costs associated with acceptance or use of any incentive, other than the initial shipping or delivery of the incentive to the winner, are the sole responsibility of the receiver of the incentive.
In the unlikely event RSG suspects the surveys or incentive entry mechanism or both have been tampered with, the payment of incentives will be discontinued until the integrity of the process is restored. If possible, RSG will place a notice on the survey website regarding any suspension and resumption of the payment of incentives.
What if I don’t travel much?
Whether your household travels a lot, just a little, or not at all, your responses to this survey will help us better understand transportation needs. Information about the amount of your household’s daily travel will help ensure future transportation improvements are efficiently sized to meet these needs. Don’t forget that short trips, such as walking the dog, count too. Deliveries to you, such as take-out or groceries, are also important.
What if my transportation habits during the survey aren’t my “typical” habits?
Yes, please report what actually happens on your assigned travel day. Even if your travel on your assigned date may not be “typical,” it is important for transportation planners to understand day-to-day variations in regional travel patterns. We’ll also ask about your typical travel habits, how your travel has changed over the past year, and how you think you’ll travel in the future.
I was invited to use the survey smartphone app, rMove. How does it work?
After you download rMove and sign up, rMove will log your trips for one week while you go about your daily life. Each day you’ll be asked to complete a short daily survey about your travel habits as well as a trip survey about each trip you make. For more information, please visit the rMove website.

How is this survey different than others I may have been invited to complete?
This is a regional household transportation survey that will help shape important decisions for transportation improvements in our region. It is the most comprehensive travel survey that captures both work and non-work trips for this region. The last Regional Travel Survey was conducted in 2017-2018, and this is the first survey to be conducted since the pandemic. Other travel surveys you may have been invited to participate in typically collect data at the national level (e.g., National Household Travel Survey), focus on a specific transit system (e.g., Metrorail survey), or include only commuters (e.g., TPB’s State of the Commute Survey).
How are the results of this survey used?
The survey results will help local and regional planners understand how day-to-day travel varies across the region. As technologies and the way people get around continue to change, the results of the survey will help agencies plan and evaluate future transportation improvements in the region.

What do I do if I never received my access code?
Please check your junk or spam folder. If you don’t see it there, please click here to contact us.
Why do you need to know my demographics, like race and income?
We want to confirm we are getting a true representation of all people living in the area. Analyzing how and where people travel can depend on certain demographic attributes and areas where they live or work.
This information gives us a better picture of travel habits and how things can be improved in the future.
Why isn’t the app recording my trips?
Please try turning your phone off and back on. This should reset your location settings and get the app to record your trips.
Can I remove a household member if they no longer want to participate?
Unfortunately, we cannot remove a participating household member once the signup survey is complete. This is a household survey; therefore, we require all adult household members to participate to get accurate travel data.
If I drive for my job (delivery, bus, rideshare driver, etc.), do I have to track all my trips?
The rMove app generates a trip survey for every trip you make. This can be cumbersome for participants who make trips all day long. You can turn off the app tracking during these busy work hours and turn it back on during your normal personal trips.
What if I’ll be out of town during some of my travel period?
If you are using the app, we encourage you to still participate in the week-long survey if you will be in town for at least one of your assigned dates.
Why don’t I have any surveys to answer even though I’m making trips?
Your trip surveys should populate when you open the rMove app. If you still don’t see any trip surveys to answer, please restart the phone.
When do I get my gift card?
Upon your completion of the initial recruitment survey, you will receive your $5 digital gift within one day. Upon completion of the entirety of this survey, you will receive a second gift card
What do I do if I haven’t received my gift card after 2-3 weeks?
If you chose a digital gift card, please check your junk or spam folder. If you chose a physical, mailed card, please click here and provide your mailing address.
